New Build Construction
From Foundations
to Finish
Building a new home is the biggest project most people ever undertake. You need a builder who understands every stage — from groundworks to roof tiles — and delivers each one to the highest standard. Geraint Ford and the team have been building homes across the South Wales valleys for over 25 years.

What This Service Involves
New build construction is the most complex service we offer — and the one that draws on every skill in our team. Building a home from the ground up requires expertise in groundworks, foundations, masonry, structural steelwork, carpentry, roofing, plumbing, electrics, plastering, and finishing. We manage all of these under one roof.
Gwent Roofing and Building Maintenance undertakes new build residential construction across Tredegar, Ebbw Vale, Merthyr Tydfil, and the wider South Wales valleys. Whether you are building a single dwelling on a plot you have purchased, replacing a dilapidated property, or constructing a bespoke home to your own design, we deliver the project from planning to handover.

We work with architects, structural engineers, and planning consultants to ensure your project complies with all regulations, meets your design vision, and stays within budget. Our role is to coordinate every element, manage every trade, and deliver a finished home that you are proud to live in.
Every new build project begins with a detailed consultation. We review your plans, assess the site, discuss specification and budget, and provide a comprehensive fixed-price tender. Our pricing is transparent — you know exactly what is included and what is not, before a single brick is laid.
What Goes Wrong With Poorly Managed New Builds
The most common complaint from self-builders and homeowners commissioning new builds is cost overruns. A project that was quoted at £200,000 somehow becomes £280,000 by completion. This happens when builders price low to win the contract and then issue variation orders for items that should have been included from the start. We do not operate this way.
Programme delays are equally damaging. Every week a project overruns costs you money — in extended rental, loan interest, and disruption. Delays cascade: if the roof is late, the first fix is late, which means plastering is late, which pushes the entire programme. We plan meticulously and manage each stage to prevent this chain reaction.
Quality issues on new builds often appear after the builder has been paid and left. Cracks in plasterwork, doors that stick, inadequate drainage, poor insulation installation — these are symptoms of a builder who prioritised speed over quality. We build to a standard that withstands scrutiny, both at handover and years later.
Communication failures cause more stress than almost any other issue. Homeowners who cannot get updates, cannot reach their builder, and feel excluded from decisions about their own home. We provide regular progress updates, include you in key decisions, and are always available by phone.

New Build Construction Methods & Standards
Foundation types depend on ground conditions. In the valleys, we commonly encounter clay soils, made ground, and sloping sites. We work with structural engineers to specify the correct foundation type — strip foundations, trench fill, raft foundations, or pile and beam systems — based on site-specific soil investigation reports.
Masonry construction using concrete block cavity walls remains the standard for domestic new builds in South Wales. Cavity widths of 100mm or more accommodate full-fill insulation that meets or exceeds Building Regulations Part L requirements. We build with precision blockwork that is plumb, level, and structurally sound.
Timber frame construction is an alternative we offer for homeowners who want faster build times and enhanced thermal performance. Timber frame panels are manufactured off-site and erected quickly, allowing the building to be weathertight in a matter of days rather than weeks. We install timber frame structures to manufacturer specifications and warranty requirements.
Roofing on new builds draws on our core expertise. We install pitched roofs using slate, tile, or composite materials to current standards. All fixings, battens, membranes, and ventilation systems are specified and installed by our own roofing team — not subcontracted. This ensures quality control from the ground up.
First and second fix services include electrical wiring (Part P certified), plumbing and heating (including renewable options such as air source heat pumps), and carpentry (door frames, skirting, architrave, staircases). We manage all services to ensure coordination and compliance.
External works including drainage, hard landscaping, driveways, and boundary treatments are included in our scope where specified. We ensure positive drainage falls away from the building, connect to mains or private drainage systems, and complete the site to a high standard.
